Online Delivery
The BCHN® exam is delivered online through ProctorU. Questions are randomly selected from the question bank, so every exam experience is unique. Question types include multiple choice, true/false, short answer, and matching.
Domain weights: Food & Nutrition (35%), A&P/Biochemistry (15%), Counseling/Ethics/Scope (10%), Nutrition in Practice (30%), Research (10%).
Test-Taking Strategies
Multiple Choice
- Read the question stem completely before looking at answers
- Eliminate obviously wrong answers first — increases your odds
- Watch for absolute words ("always," "never") — these are usually wrong
- If two answers are similar, one of them is likely correct
- "All of the above" is correct more often than "none of the above"
Time Management
- Pace: roughly 1 minute per question
- Don't spend more than 2 minutes on any single question
- Flag difficult questions and come back if time allows
- Trust your first instinct — changed answers are wrong more often
Short Answer & Matching
- For matching: start with the terms you're most confident about
- For short answer: be concise and specific — they're looking for key terms
The 48-Hour Protocol
Two Days Before
- Do a light review of your weakest domain — don't cram new material
- Review your flashcard deck one final time
- Set up your ProctorU environment (quiet room, clear desk, webcam, stable internet)
- Test your computer and internet connection with ProctorU's system check
The Night Before
- Stop studying by early evening — no late-night cramming
- Prepare your ID and any allowed materials
- Get 7-8 hours of sleep
- Avoid alcohol and heavy meals
Morning Of
- Eat a balanced breakfast with protein and complex carbs
- Avoid excessive caffeine — it can increase anxiety
- Log in 15 minutes early to get settled
- Take 3 slow, deep breaths before starting
- Remember: you've prepared for this. Trust your training.
Managing Test Anxiety
Test anxiety is normal and manageable. Here are evidence-based techniques:
- Box breathing: Inhale 4 seconds → hold 4 seconds → exhale 4 seconds → hold 4 seconds. Repeat 3-4 times.
- 5-4-3-2-1 grounding: Name 5 things you see, 4 you feel, 3 you hear, 2 you smell, 1 you taste.
- Positive self-talk: Replace "I don't know this" with "I've studied this and I'll do my best."
- Progress reframe: If you hit a hard question, remind yourself of the ones you've already answered confidently.
